Quartzite is metamorphosed sandstone fused into nearly pure quartz. It is harder than granite, will not etch from acid the way marble does, and often looks like marble. It is also frequently mislabeled at the yard — soft dolomitic marble is regularly sold as quartzite, which is the single biggest buyer risk in this category.

Verify it is actually quartzite
Two field tests. A steel knife blade will not scratch true quartzite but will scratch dolomitic marble. A drop of lemon juice on an inconspicuous corner will etch marble and leave quartzite untouched. Ask the fabricator to perform both before you commit — reputable Charlotte yards will not object.
Fabrication is harder and costs more
Because quartzite is so hard, it eats diamond tooling and cuts slowly. Expect a fabrication premium over granite, and expect a shop with proper CNC equipment rather than a hand-cut operation. Mitered edges in quartzite are unforgiving of a shop that is out of calibration.
