Why granite still wins outdoors
Engineered quartz uses a polymer resin binder that yellows and warps under direct sunlight, which is why every major quartz manufacturer excludes exterior installation from warranty coverage. Granite has no binder. A leathered or honed granite grill surround on a Lake Norman patio will look the same in ten years.
Sealing and real-world maintenance
Granite is porous but far less so than marble. A drop of water left on an unsealed slab will darken temporarily; that is the test. Most fabricators apply an impregnating sealer at install, and resealing every 12 to 18 months takes fifteen minutes with a spray bottle and a cloth. Clean with pH-neutral cleaner — never vinegar, bleach or abrasive powder.
