Do I need a permit to replace countertops?

No. Countertop replacement alone does not require a Charlotte-Mecklenburg permit. Moving plumbing or adding electrical does.

Will there be a visible seam?

On kitchens longer than about 10 feet or with an L-return, yes. A good fabricator places the seam at a sink or cooktop cutout and color-matches epoxy so it is felt more than seen.

Can new countertops go on my existing cabinets?

Usually, if the boxes are level, structurally sound and not particleboard that has swollen from water. Your fabricator will assess at template.

What is included in a fabrication scope

A complete countertop scope covers far more than the stone. Demolition and haul-away of the existing tops, laser templating, slab layout approval, CNC cutting, edge polishing, seam bonding on site, sink and cooktop cutouts, faucet drilling, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, and a final impregnating sealer application on natural stone.

What is usually excluded: cabinet leveling or repair, tile backsplash unless specified, electrical changes, and plumbing beyond a straight reconnect. Get the exclusions in writing.

Choosing a thickness and edge profile

3cm stone installed directly on cabinetry is the Charlotte standard and requires no plywood substrate. 2cm material must be laminated at the edge to look substantial, which introduces a visible glue line on darker stone. Mitered 4cm and 6cm aprons read as a solid block and are the current premium look on islands.

Overhangs beyond 10 inches on 3cm stone need steel or corbel support regardless of what a salesperson tells you — unsupported overhangs are the single most common cause of cracked tops.

How pricing actually works

Fabricators price by square foot of finished surface, plus per-linear-foot edge work, per-cutout charges and a minimum slab purchase. That last item catches people: a 22-square-foot kitchen still consumes a slab, so the effective per-foot cost climbs on very small jobs unless a remnant is available.
